Special places and good design

The UK’s rural areas include highly valued and distinctive landscapes, including iconic National Parks and World Heritage Sites. In addition to our historic cities, rural areas include numerous market towns and villages, many of which are cherished for their architectural heritage and distinctive qualities, making them very desirable places to live and to visit.

Some towns and cities have experienced growth over recent years, and the UK has a strong track record as a place where contemporary design and the historic environment co-exist in harmony.

In considering our new development needs, the planning system can help protect and enhance the landscapes and townscapes that make places special.
Not only must we protect the best places created by past generations, we should also be creating outstanding new buildings, green spaces and places that will be treasured by future generations.
