Destination Planning

Tourism and leisure activity is a valued part of our global economy and culture. We work with destination management organisations (DMOs), developers and attraction managers across the world to support the creation and management of truly outstanding destinations.

We offer a broad range of services from concept to delivery, often working in partnership with other consultants to create best in class teams. Through this approach we can offer:

  • Strategic development and planning

  • Business and operational planning

  • Masterplanning

  • Visitor experience and interpretation planning

  • Landscape design

  • Architectural design

  • Environmental impact assessment and consenting

We have a particular track record and expertise in:

Heritage & Nature Destinations

Enabling tourism activity at and around some of the world’s most sensitive and valued places is a challenge that we have risen to on many occasions.  Working closely with our clients and site curators we have led the preparation of inspirational masterplans and proposals for keynote sites across the world. Many of these are recognised as being of the highest importance; and all are extraordinarily sensitive.

Examples of our work include:

  • Stonehenge WHS, UK

  • Aflaj WHS, Oman

  • Orkney WHS, Scotland

  • Jazierah Al Hamra Heritage Village, UAE

  • Bend in the Boyne WHS, Ireland

  • Dumbarton Castle, Scotland

  • National Wetland Centre for Wales

  • Liverpool WHS, UK

  • Salut archaeological park, Oman

Landscape-scale Destinations

AlUla, KSA

Visitors relish the opportunity to visit and explore places, not just neatly bounded sites. These large-scale locales offer guests the opportunity to encounter a diverse range of stories, sites and landscapes; to carve their own journey and create a highly personal experience – often very different in nature to a neatly bounded and controlled site.

Creating high quality landscape destinations that offer personalised journeys in a way that also safeguards the place is a delicate balancing act requiring a multi-disciplinary approach. We specialise in working with our partners to create strategies and plans to develop sustainable tourism offers for large-scale landscape destinations, including work at:

  • AlUla, KSA

  • Hadrian’s Wall WHS, UK

  • Ain Al Zayanah, Libya

  • Al Wabra, Qatar

  • Green Mountain, Libya

  • Wadi Al Swain, Libya

Leisure & Sports Attractions

Leisure activities are a vital component in peoples’ health and wellbeing. A diverse range of leisure and sport offers can strengthen the social and economic fabric of an area and should form part of a strategic approach to destination planning. We work with developers, local authorities and charitable bodies to plan and design a range of sport and leisure facilities, examples include:

  • 2012 Olympic Mountain Bike course

  • London Resort – Europe’s soon to be largest new theme park

  • Brooklands, Worthing – new destination science-themed park and play facility

  • National Wildlife Conservation Park, Bristol – masterplan for a contemporary wildlife park

  • Hurtwood Park Polo Club

Resorts & Tourism Centres

Many tourists seek out quality resorts and hotel complexes as a focal point for their holidays. They are looking for a blend of luxury and distinctiveness, places they can “show off” to their friends and family; and importantly places they can feel comfortable in. Working closely with clients and their advisors we have a track record in preparing masterplans and detailed landscape / urban designs for resorts and centres, including for:

  • Alakati Village, Cyprus

  • Wadi Alswani Resort, Libya

  • Rabat, Morroco

  • La Marina, Morroco
